Dhaka, December 25, 2025: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken over ownership of the Chattogram Royals for the remainder of the 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), officials confirmed on Thursday.

BCB vice-chairman Shakhawat Hossain, a member of the BPL Governing Council, said the move came after Royals owner Kayum Rashed requested the board step in due to difficulties managing the team under the current circumstances.

“We have taken over the ownership of the team, and the board will now run it. We will meet with the players soon to discuss the next steps,” Shakhawat said.

According to a letter submitted by Rashed, the franchise struggled to secure sponsors amid widespread media speculation about its financial and operational stability. The letter cited rumours regarding unpaid franchise fees, bank guarantees, and player payments—though not contractually required at that stage—which severely affected the team’s reputation.

“These rumours gained traction across multiple platforms, causing several potential and confirmed sponsors to withdraw their support. The resulting financial challenges have directly impacted the team’s preparation and jeopardised its future in the tournament,” the letter added.

BCB officials noted that the franchise’s early association with controversial figures had further damaged its credibility in the sponsorship market.

To stabilise the team, former national captain Habibul Bashar has been appointed as mentor, while Mizanur Rahman Babul and Nafis Iqbal will serve as team managers. Bashar had initially stepped down from the mentor role citing family reasons, though sources suggest his discomfort over the involvement of questionable individuals within the franchise influenced his decision.

The intervention comes after several Royals players reportedly left their team hotel on Wednesday, December 25, citing unpaid dues.

With the BPL set to begin in Sylhet on December 26, the BCB’s takeover ensures that the Chattogram Royals can continue to participate in the tournament.
