Opposition Chief Whip meets NA Speaker on appointment of Opposition Leader

Islamabad, January 5, 2025: Opposition Chief Whip Amir Dogar on Monday met Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to discuss matters related to the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

According to a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat’s Directorate General of Media, Amir Dogar presented documents to the Speaker regarding the withdrawal of court cases linked to former Opposition Leader Umar Ayub. He also reiterated the opposition’s demand for Mahmood Khan Achakzai to be appointed as the new Opposition Leader.

Responding to the concerns raised, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq assured that all proceedings would be carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, and the rules of the National Assembly. He said the House would be formally informed about the matter during the upcoming session.

The Speaker further clarified that the process for appointing the Opposition Leader would be initiated afresh, emphasizing that the National Assembly’s rules governing the appointment are clear and would be followed in letter and spirit.
