Islamabad, February 7, 2026: The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad commemorated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence on February 4, 2026, with a formal ceremony held at the Official Residence of High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne.

The event, led by High Commissioner Senevirathne along with officers and staff of the mission, was attended by members of the Sri Lankan community serving in senior roles at leading companies and international organizations, including the United Nations. Sri Lankan students from universities near Islamabad and military officers undergoing training under government-sponsored programmes were also present.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag by the High Commissioner, followed by the singing of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed to honor national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom, sovereignty, and unity.

Religious observances featuring clergy from all major faiths were held to invoke blessings for the nation, reflecting Sri Lanka’s longstanding tradition of harmony and coexistence.

Messages from Sri Lanka’s President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism were read during the ceremony, reaffirming the country’s commitment to unity, reconciliation, sustainable development, and national progress.

In his address, High Commissioner Senevirathne highlighted the shared responsibility of Sri Lankans at home and abroad in advancing nation-building efforts. He also reflected on the longstanding and cordial relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, recalling key milestones and mutual support that have strengthened bilateral ties, particularly during challenging times.

Emphasizing the need to further enhance these friendly relations, the High Commissioner encouraged the Sri Lankan community to actively contribute to deepening bilateral cooperation and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.

The ceremony concluded with a reception hosted by the High Commission, offering guests an opportunity for fellowship while reflecting on Sri Lanka’s journey as an independent nation.
