Imagine standing on the Cliff Walk in Newport, where the Atlantic Ocean’s deep blue waves crash against rugged cliffs, and the majestic Gilded Age mansions—such as The Breakers, Marble House, and Rough Point—overlook the endless sea, evoking the opulence of America’s golden era. Narragansett Bay stretches wide, offering serene vistas, while Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood pulses with authentic Italian flavors, charming cafes, and historic architecture. The sandy shores of Misquamicut, Narragansett, and Block Island, the guiding light of Beavertail Lighthouse, and the scenic Ocean Drive deliver unforgettable natural beauty.
Rhode Island’s cultural and artistic heritage is unparalleled: The Gilded Age mansions in Newport showcase the wealth and taste of families like the Vanderbilts and Astors. Touro Synagogue (America’s oldest synagogue, established in 1763), Trinity Church, and the Redwood Library stand as enduring historical treasures. In Providence, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum houses an extraordinary collection of art, and the iconic WaterFire events transform the Providence River into a mesmerizing spectacle of fire and light.
The state’s natural landscape is profoundly maritime: Over 400 miles of coastline, the expansive Narragansett Bay, the dramatic cliffs and lighthouses of Block Island, family-friendly outings at Roger Williams Park and its Zoo, and hiking trails with ocean views in Beavertail State Park.
Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by land area, yet its population remains steady and engaged. As of July 1, 2025 (U.S. Census Vintage 2025 estimate), the population stands at approximately 1,114,521. Its Gross State Product exceeds $84.8 billion (BEA Q3 2025 data, seasonally adjusted annual rate).
Geographically, Rhode Island borders Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east. To the south, it is embraced by the Atlantic Ocean through Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound, with a small maritime border shared with New York east of Long Island. There is no direct land border with Canada, though proximity through New England provides easy access northward.

A brief historical glimpse: Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a beacon of religious freedom, Rhode Island was among the first to champion liberty. Touro Synagogue reflects early Jewish heritage, colonial Newport flourished in trade, the state played a vital role in the American Revolution, and the Gilded Age brought immense prosperity. Today, it excels in education, technology, and tourism.
Education holds global prestige: Brown University (an Ivy League powerhouse and research leader), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) (renowned worldwide for art and design), Providence College, and the University of Rhode Island lead in sciences, arts, business, and innovation.
Tourism continues to break records, drawing millions to Newport’s mansions, the Cliff Walk, pristine beaches, Providence’s festivals, and natural wonders.
Diversity defines Rhode Island’s spirit: A majority white population alongside significant Hispanic and Black communities (especially in Providence), Asian groups, and others. The Muslim community is estimated at around 2,599 (about 0.2% of the population), with active centers like Masjid Al-Islam in North Smithfield (the state’s largest mosque) and the Muslim Community Center of Rhode Island. The Pakistani community, though small (a few thousand across Providence and surrounding areas), is warm, active, and integral—contributing through halal restaurants (such as Peshawri Kebabs, Flavors of Nawab, and Masala spots), grocery stores, community events, and businesses.
On a personal note: In 2024, during a family visit to Rhode Island, I had the privilege of connecting with the local Muslim community. My dear friends Muhammad Asghar Khan, Muhammad Saqib Warraich, Muhammad Mumtaz, and other cherished companions extended extraordinary hospitality. They not only guided us to the state’s most beautiful sites but also cared for us with genuine warmth—sharing delicious Pakistani meals, thoughtful gestures, and unwavering friendship. Their generosity, kindness, and brotherly spirit turned a simple trip into an unforgettable experience, etching Rhode Island deeply in our hearts.
Sports enthusiasm runs strong: The Providence Bruins (AHL hockey), University of Rhode Island Rams (collegiate athletics), Newport’s storied sailing and tennis traditions (home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame), and water-based activities like boating and surfing.
In the previous column, we explored Illinois’s Prairie Spirit—its vast plains and Chicago’s brilliance. Today, embrace Rhode Island’s Ocean Spirit, a symbol of maritime freedom, historic grandeur, innovation, diversity, and the American dream in a small yet mighty package.
