Murree/Rawalpindi, April 4, 2026: Dr. Muhammad Raza Tanveer, District Police Officer (DPO) Murree, has launched a comprehensive “Smart-Shield” Safe Tourism plan in response to an expected spell of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms from April 6 to 9.

The initiative follows 60mm of rainfall recorded over the past 48 hours, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasting a more intense weather system in the coming days. Officials said the strategy reflects a shift from traditional management to a proactive safety model.

Despite the adverse weather outlook, tourist activity remains high. Since April 2, over 9,400 vehicles have entered Murree, with more than 4,100 reaching the city. While around 7,000 vehicles have exited, authorities warned that thousands of visitors still present must remain vigilant.

Dr. Tanveer urged tourists to avoid risky outdoor activities, particularly during peak storm days, and instead experience Murree’s indoor cultural attractions, including local cuisine and hospitality. “We want visitors to enjoy Murree safely by embracing its indoor heritage,” he said.

A strict advisory has also been issued against night-time travel due to the risks of dense fog and possible landslides. Visitors and residents have been urged to avoid mountain roads after dark.

Authorities further advised that vehicles should be parked under cover to prevent hail damage, while drivers must ensure fog lights are fully functional to cope with reduced visibility.

The DPO also encouraged tourists to use the “Save Tourism App” for real-time updates and guidance, while cautioning against risky behavior such as taking selfies at dangerous locations.

Emphasizing responsible travel, Dr. Tanveer said that eco-tourism—prioritizing both safety and environmental care—is essential for enjoying Murree during the ongoing severe weather conditions.
