Islamabad, April 5,2026: In a landmark international collaboration to safeguard the rights of citizens abroad, the Canadian High Commission and Justice Project Pakistan (JPP) have launched a sophisticated digital platform, ‘Detained Abroad’. This strategic initiative serves as a vital legal shield for over 21,000 Pakistani nationals currently incarcerated in foreign jurisdictions, with a specific focus on streamlining consular access across the Indo-Pacific region. By aligning Pakistan’s legal support framework with international human rights standards, the registry aims to ensure that no citizen is left vulnerable due to a lack of legal representation or diplomatic coordination.
During the high-profile launch, Canadian High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan underscored Canada’s commitment to the project, noting that the portal will play a pivotal role in providing timely assistance to Canadian, Pakistani, and other nationals alike.
Highlighting the initiative’s humanitarian impact, Senator Zeeshan Khanzada described overseas Pakistanis as the “backbone of the national economy” and emphasized that the platform would dismantle the formidable language and legal barriers that often lead to miscarriages of justice. The registry is designed to empower families and lawyers with critical information regarding foreign capital punishment laws, prevent the mistreatment of detainees, and create a transparent pathway for repatriation.
The event drew significant international attention, with senior diplomats from the European Union, Portugal, and Ireland joining Pakistani officials to endorse the mission.
Speakers, including JPP’s Haris Zaki and Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis Secretary Nadeem Aslam, highlighted that the platform is more than just a digital tool; it is a unified effort to foster synergy between diplomats, legal experts, and civil society. This coordinated approach is expected to modernize how Pakistan manages the legal challenges of its diaspora, ensuring that justice and protection remain accessible to every citizen, regardless of geographical boundaries.
