Islamabad, April 22, 2026: President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Sardar Tahir Mehmood, has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review and rationalise the policy of early market closures, calling for a more balanced and consultative approach to protect economic activity.

In a detailed letter addressed to the prime minister, the ICCI president highlighted the adverse economic impact of enforced early closures of retail and commercial markets across the country, particularly in Islamabad. He noted that the decision, taken without sufficient consultation with stakeholders, has disrupted business operations and affected multiple sectors.

Sardar Tahir Mehmood said the policy’s repercussions extend beyond retail outlets to restaurants, shopping malls, small and medium enterprises, and various service providers, contributing to a slowdown in overall commercial activity. He emphasised that the business community is already facing economic challenges, and such measures are further compounding their difficulties.

Referring to the broader context, he stated that Pakistan’s role in facilitating ongoing US-Iran negotiations has enhanced its diplomatic standing, and the business community stands ready to support the anticipated next round of talks in Islamabad, recognising their importance for regional stability and economic confidence.

He stressed that a rational adjustment in market closure timings would provide immediate relief to businesses, help restore confidence, and contribute to economic stability. He also reiterated ICCI’s commitment to working with the government to ensure policies are practical, inclusive, and growth-oriented.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the Islamabad Restaurants Association, led by Chairman Habibullah Zahid, visited the Chamber House to discuss the issue. The delegation highlighted the challenges faced by the restaurant sector due to early closure timings and expressed support for ICCI’s stance on policy rationalisation.

ICCI Senior Vice President Tahir Ayub, Executive Members Zulqurnain Abbasi and Imran Minhas were also present on the occasion. The restaurant association delegation included President Khurram Khan and General Secretary Sikandar Bakhtiar, along with other members.
