Bucharest, May 29, 2026: A Russian drone carrying explosives and reportedly involved in attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine crashed in the Romanian city of Galați, triggering a fire on the roof of a residential apartment building and heightening regional security concerns.

According to Romanian authorities, two people sustained minor injuries in the incident, while several residents required medical assistance. The affected building was evacuated as emergency teams responded to the scene.

Romanian officials said the country’s air defense systems detected Russian drones on radar during the incident. In response, two Romanian Air Force aircraft and a military helicopter were scrambled, with authorization reportedly granted to engage hostile aerial targets if necessary.

Romanian Minister for Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu described the incident as “a serious and irresponsible escalation” by the Russian Federation and condemned what she called a violation of Romania’s airspace and international law.

In a statement shared on social media, the foreign minister said Romania has informed European Union member states, NATO allies, and the NATO Secretary General about the circumstances surrounding the incident. She added that Romania has requested accelerated support for the transfer of anti-drone defense capabilities.

“The Russian Federation bears direct responsibility for these grave and irresponsible actions,” Toiu stated.

She further emphasized that Romania would pursue the necessary diplomatic measures in response to the incident and work to increase international pressure on Russia in support of “an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire.”

The incident comes amid ongoing regional tensions linked to the war in Ukraine and increasing concerns among NATO member states over airspace security near the conflict zone.
