Islamabad, May 29, 2026: Pakistan on Friday reaffirmed its strong commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifices of UN peacekeepers serving across the world on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
In a message issued by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Pakistan honoured the memory of 183 Pakistani peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the UN flag in missions aimed at maintaining international peace and security.
The statement noted that Pakistan has remained one of the leading troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping missions for more than six decades. According to the Foreign Office, over 270,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served in 48 UN missions worldwide, earning recognition for their professionalism, discipline and commitment.
The message emphasized that Pakistan’s contributions reflect its strong belief in multilateralism and adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
Pakistan also highlighted the role of the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), established to share the country’s extensive peacekeeping experience. The center has provided professional UN peacekeeping training to officers from more than 50 friendly countries.
Referring to regional developments, the statement noted that Pakistan hosts one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). It added that recent developments in the region underline the continuing relevance of the mission and reinforce the need for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
The Foreign Office observed that this year’s International Day of UN Peacekeepers comes at a challenging time for peacekeeping missions worldwide, as operations face increasingly complex political and security conditions along with financial and operational constraints.
Pakistan stressed the need for renewed political support, predictable funding, realistic mandates and improved operational capabilities for peacekeeping missions.
The statement further said Pakistan supports reforms aimed at strengthening UN peacekeeping operations by making them more agile, technologically advanced and responsive to realities on the ground. It also underscored the importance of ending impunity for crimes committed against peacekeepers to ensure justice and deter future attacks.
Pakistan additionally praised the contributions of its women peacekeepers, stating that they continue to enhance the effectiveness, credibility and inclusiveness of UN peacekeeping missions. The government reaffirmed its commitment to increasing the meaningful participation of women in operational and leadership roles within peace operations.
As a current member of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan said it would continue working with international partners to improve peacekeeping through better mandate design, enhanced safety and security, accountability and sustainable financing.
The message concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for United Nations peacekeeping as one of the most practical and effective tools for maintaining global peace and security.
