ICC reportedly convinces PCB, other boards to adopt hybrid model for Champions Trophy

Dubai, November 19, 2024-The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly persuaded the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and other member boards to agree to a hybrid model for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, according to a private TV channel citing sources. The ICC has also advised the PCB to avoid making statements against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The development comes as the ICC races against time to finalize and announce the tournament schedule, which is expected tomorrow, November 20. Currently, the matches are planned to take place at three venues in Pakistan — Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore.

Pakistan, the reigning champions after clinching the title in England in 2017, is set to host the tournament from February 19 to March 9, 2025. However, the event has been overshadowed by political tensions between India and Pakistan, which have prevented India from touring Pakistan since 2008. Matches between the two nations have since been restricted to neutral venues during multi-nation events.

Notably, during the 2023 Asia Cup, India opted to play all its matches in Sri Lanka under a similar hybrid model.

Last week, the ICC informed the PCB that the BCCI had formally communicated India’s refusal to play in Pakistan during the Champions Trophy. Sources revealed that the ICC has stressed the significant financial losses all cricket boards would face if India abstains from the tournament. Additionally, the PCB was cautioned about the economic impact of failing to host matches in Pakistan.

ICC officials reportedly argued that the hybrid model is the most viable option to ensure the tournament’s success and financial stability. Discussions are ongoing between the ICC and member boards to finalize a schedule under this model, with the PCB actively involved in consultations.

As the clock ticks closer to the schedule announcement, cricket fans worldwide eagerly await clarity on how the hybrid model will shape the marquee event, ensuring participation from all teams, including India.
