ICC calls meeting to address concerns over Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan

Dubai, November 22, 2024 – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly convened an emergency meeting to address growing concerns over the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan. Senior officials from all affiliated boards will attend the meeting to discuss various issues surrounding the tournament, including safety concerns and the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India.

According to reports, the ICC plans to act as a mediator in an attempt to resolve differences, particularly in light of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision not to travel to Pakistan amid strained bilateral relations.

Despite India’s refusal, Pakistan has remained firm in its commitment to host the tournament and has rejected the so-called “Hybrid Model.” Under this model, some matches would be played in Pakistan, while others would take place at a neutral venue, as seen in the 2023 Asia Cup when Pakistan and Sri Lanka co-hosted the event.

Key topics to be discussed at the meeting include the groupings for India and Pakistan, the potential for hosting the semi-finals and final at a neutral venue, and what steps will be taken if Pakistan refuses to accept the hybrid model. There will also be discussions about the possibility of holding the entire tournament at a neutral venue or even the scenario where Pakistan might opt not to participate.

Additionally, the BCCI has lodged a formal complaint with the ICC regarding Pakistan’s decision to hold a trophy tour in disputed regions, including Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), Islamabad, Taxila, and Khanpur. In response, the ICC has revised the tournament’s itinerary to exclude these areas and focus on other cities across Pakistan.

The Champions Trophy, last played in 2017, saw Pakistan defeating India by 180 runs in the final held in London. The tournament’s return is expected to reignite interest in 50-over cricket, which has waned in recent years, especially following the quadrennial ODI World Cup.
