Rawalpindi, August 22, 2026: The federal government has authorised the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi for six months to perform “sensitive security duties”, according to an Interior Ministry order issued on Friday.

The order, a copy of which was seen by Dawn, said the deployment had been approved following a request from the Punjab Home Department.

“Pursuant to the request made by the Punjab Home Department […] the federal government, in exercise of the powers conferred under Article 245 of the Constitution is pleased to authorise deployment of three companies of Pakistan Army for sensitive security duties in Rawalpindi to avoid any undesirable situation as well as to respond effectively in any unforeseen situation as per the requirement of the district administration for a period of six months with immediate effect,” the order stated.

The deployment has been authorised with immediate effect and will remain in place for six months.

The order did not specify any particular security threat or provide details about the locations where the Army personnel would be deployed. It said the troops would assist the district administration in preventing any “undesirable situation” and responding effectively to unforeseen circumstances.

The authorisation has been issued under Article 245 of the Constitution, which provides for the deployment of the armed forces in aid of civil power.

The move comes amid heightened security concerns in the country, particularly in the wake of increased militant activity in parts of Pakistan. The deployment is intended to strengthen the district administration’s capacity to respond to potential security challenges and maintain public order.
