Amstelveen, August 28, 2026: Four-time champions Pakistan clinched an enthralling 4-3 victory over South Africa on penalties in the classification match at Wagener Stadium on Friday to finish 11th at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
The 11th-place finish marked Pakistan’s best performance at the World Cup in two decades. The Green Shirts had finished 12th in the 2010 and 2018 editions, while they failed to qualify for the 2014 and 2023 tournaments. Their previous best placing came in 2006, when Pakistan finished sixth.
The fiercely contested match saw Pakistan recover from a two-goal deficit before forcing the contest into a penalty shootout and eventually prevailing through the experience and composure of former captain Ammad Butt.
South Africa made the stronger start, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Trevor de Lora before Dayaan Cassiem doubled the advantage three minutes into the second quarter.
Pakistan responded impressively, with Afraz reducing the deficit before Mohammad Ammad restored parity as the Green Shirts scored twice in quick succession to level the contest before halftime.
Rana Waheed Ashraf then put Pakistan ahead early in the third quarter, but South Africa fought back once again, with Mustaphaa Cassiem finding the net in the 40th minute to make it 3-3.
The drama intensified in the final quarter. Both sides pushed for the decisive goal, and South Africa regained the lead when Mustaphaa converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute to complete his brace.
Pakistan refused to surrender, however, and produced a dramatic late response. Muhammad Hammaduddin struck in the final minute to make it 4-4 and send the match into a penalty shootout.
Mustaphaa stepped up first for South Africa and converted, while Zikriya Hayat calmly found the net for Pakistan to make it 1-1.
Calvin Davis and Umar Mustafa then scored their respective attempts as the teams remained level after two rounds.
The balance shifted when South Africa missed its next two attempts through Hans Neethling and Jamie Seales, while Hannan Shahid converted for Pakistan to put the Green Shirts 3-2 ahead.
Pakistan appeared on the verge of victory when Rana Waheed Ashraf was given the opportunity to seal the contest, but he failed to convert. Mustaphaa then scored South Africa’s final attempt to level the shootout at 3-3, leaving Pakistan with one attempt remaining.
The responsibility fell to veteran Ammad Butt, and the former Pakistan captain held his nerve to dispatch the decisive penalty and secure a dramatic victory for the Green Shirts.
