Islamabad, September 1, 2026: Member of the German Bundestag Christoph Schmid called on Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah at Parliament House on Tuesday, with the two sides discussing bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation, economic engagement and regional developments.

Welcoming the German parliamentarian, Deputy Speaker Shah said Pakistan attached great importance to its longstanding and friendly relations with Germany, describing the bilateral relationship as being rooted in mutual respect, trust and cooperation across diverse fields.

He noted that parliamentary delegations and exchanges between Pakistan and Germany had remained active in the past but witnessed a decline following the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the need to revive parliamentary interaction, saying parliamentary diplomacy could play an important role in further consolidating bilateral ties.

The Deputy Speaker recalled the 2014 visit to Pakistan by then Speaker of the German Bundestag Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, describing it as an important milestone in parliamentary relations. He said interactions between the German delegation and representatives of different segments of Pakistani society had contributed to greater mutual understanding and people-to-people contacts.

Shah also appreciated Germany’s humanitarian assistance to Pakistan during the devastating 2010 floods and its continued support during natural disasters and other regional challenges. He said Pakistan valued Germany’s assistance and its positive and constructive approach towards regional developments.

Highlighting Pakistan’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and geographical diversity, the Deputy Speaker said the country offered significant opportunities for investment, particularly in tourism and other economic sectors. He invited German investors and the business community to explore Pakistan’s investment potential.

Schmid thanked the Deputy Speaker for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him at Parliament House.

The German parliamentarian appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace, dialogue and de-escalation in the region. Referring to recent tensions in the Middle East, he commended Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts, saying Islamabad’s initiatives to promote dialogue and engagement among countries had attracted international attention and appreciation.

Schmid said Pakistan had an important role to play in advancing peace and dialogue.

Both sides agreed that stronger parliamentary engagement and expanded people-to-people contacts could provide fresh impetus to Pakistan-Germany relations. They reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new avenues for parliamentary diplomacy, economic cooperation and closer interaction between the peoples of the two countries.

Special Secretary, Special Initiatives, Syed Shamoon Hashmi, was also present during the meeting.
