Peshawar, November 24, 2024 – A week long ceasefire has been agreed between the two warring tribes in the Kurram Agency region, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, the KP Chief Minister’s Adviser on Information, confirmed on Sunday.

The decision comes after a series of deadly clashes, including one on Thursday when a convoy of around 200 vehicles was ambushed with heavy gunfire in Kurram’s Bagan town, resulting in the deaths of at least 64 people. On the heels of these incidents, 18 more individuals were killed in fresh violence yesterday.

In an effort to prevent further bloodshed, the provincial government has also announced the formation of a high-powered commission to address long-standing land disputes between the tribes in Kurram district.

Barrister Saif, in a statement, said that both tribes had agreed to a seven-day ceasefire, during which they would return the bodies of the deceased and release prisoners. He also mentioned that a government delegation had met with the Shia tribe leaders on Saturday, followed by discussions with Sunni tribe leaders today, before returning to Peshawar.
