Murree, September 29, 2026: Murree Police and City Traffic Police have intensified a crackdown on public and commercial transport following a tragic school van fire, issuing 11,092 challans to 10,808 vehicles and imposing fines of more than Rs15.87 million during August and September.
District Police Officer (DPO) Murree Dr. Raza Tanveer Sipra directed the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) and district police teams to step up field enforcement and conduct rigorous inspections, particularly of school transport and commercial passenger vehicles.
Providing an update on the school van incident, the DPO said four children who sustained burns covering more than 25 per cent of their bodies had been referred to Rawalpindi for specialised treatment. Two children remained unharmed, while others suffered minor burns.
According to the enforcement report, authorities took action against 1,682 vehicles for passenger overloading and 566 for goods overloading during the period.
Police also issued 78 challans against public transport vehicles operating with substandard or hazardous gas cylinders, imposed Rs234,000 in fines and registered three FIRs.
The crackdown further resulted in penalties against 576 vehicles operating without route permits, 11 without valid fitness certificates, 215 drivers operating without valid licences, 59 underage drivers and 57 vehicles without registration.
Traffic police also fined 1,956 motorcyclists for riding without helmets, 1,837 drivers for seatbelt violations and 1,764 motorists for using mobile phones while driving.
Other violations included 673 cases of improper lane use, 208 instances of disrupting traffic flow and 193 cases of illegal parking.
DPO Dr. Raza Tanveer Sipra said public safety remained the top priority and no leniency would be shown towards transporters operating unfit or non-compliant vehicles.
He directed commercial transport operators to ensure that vehicles were equipped with certified fire extinguishers and that drivers and relevant staff received mandatory safety-handling training.\
The DPO said strict enforcement would continue to ensure compliance with vehicle safety standards and traffic regulations and to prevent avoidable accidents on Murree’s roads.
