Addis Ababa, October 6,2026: Ethiopia has formed a new federal government after the House of Peoples’ Representatives elected Dr. Abiy Ahmed as prime minister for another five-year term.
The development came during the inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa, marking the formal formation of the new Federal Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The election followed the country’s 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully with more than 54 million registered voters. The Prosperity Party won 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.
Voting was held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. International observer missions, including those from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), endorsed the electoral process as transparent.
Addressing the inaugural session, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the election as a process that had strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite numerous challenges.
He said political victories and defeats were a natural part of democratic competition, adding that Ethiopia should move forward with unity and collective national purpose.
Abiy also underscored Ethiopia’s role in East Africa, saying the country’s regional standing was built on its own strength, resilience and popular support. He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to serving as an anchor for regional peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Oumer H. Oba congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking their official oaths for the five-year term.
The ambassador said the formation of the new government reflected the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the Ethiopian people’s commitment to democratic norms and values.
He wished Ethiopia continued peace, prosperity and development, along with greater national unity and social cohesion.
