Islamabad, October 10,2026: The Federation of Progressive Students organised a solidarity event at the Embassy of Cuba in Islamabad to commemorate Cuban revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevara and express opposition to the US economic blockade against Cuba.
The event brought together students, academics, members of solidarity organisations, including the Pakistan Cuba Social Forum and the Awami Workers Party, as well as members of the Pakistani Cuban Doctors Association.
Speakers representing the participating organisations highlighted Che Guevara’s commitment to disadvantaged communities, his internationalist legacy, his close friendship with Fidel Castro and his dedication to the Cuban Revolution. They also recalled his opposition to what they described as the hegemonic policies of imperialism.
Participants paid tribute to Cuba’s humanitarian assistance to Pakistan following the devastating October 8, 2005 earthquake, when thousands of Cuban medical specialists arrived in the country to provide emergency medical care and save lives.
A key focus of the event was opposition to the US economic blockade and sanctions against Cuba, which speakers described as having severe consequences for the Cuban people, particularly in the energy sector.
The participants called for an end to the restrictions, arguing that Cuba did not pose a threat and that the blockade itself was the issue requiring attention.
The event concluded with renewed expressions of solidarity with the Cuban people and support for stronger ties between Pakistan and Cuba.
