Seoul, December 14, 2024: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been suspended after a second impeachment motion, sparked by his controversial six-hour martial law declaration, passed with a two-thirds majority in parliament.
The Constitutional Court will now decide within 180 days whether to permanently remove Yoon or restore his powers. Celebrations erupted outside parliament, where over 200,000 protesters had demanded his resignation.
If removed, new presidential elections must be held within 60 days. Yoon is the second president in South Korea’s history to face impeachment, following Roh Moo-hyun in 2004.
