17,738 madressahs Registered with government, Senate told

Islamabad, December 19, 2024: The Ministry of Education informed the Senate on Thursday that 17,738 madressahs are officially registered with the government, collectively enrolling 2,249,520 students.

During a question-and-answer session in the Upper House of Parliament, it was revealed that Punjab hosts the highest number of registered seminaries at 10,012, with a student population of 664,065. Sindh follows with 2,416 madressahs accommodating 188,182 students.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 4,005 madressahs are registered, enrolling 1,283,024 students—the largest student population among all provinces. Balochistan has 575 registered madressahs with 71,815 students.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir has 445 registered madressahs serving 26,787 students, while Islamabad has 199 seminaries with 11,301 students. In Gilgit-Baltistan, 86 registered madressahs cater to 4,346 students.

The education ministry also clarified that while there is no direct financial support for madressahs, the Directorate General of Religious Education (DGRE) has provided 1,196 teachers to 598 seminaries and distributed textbooks to 154,849 students to support contemporary education.
