Peshawar, January 3, 2025: Local peace committees, including tribal elders, political figures, and community leaders, have been established in Kurram district to restore peace and ensure the safe movement of essential goods. The initiative aims to address longstanding conflicts and promote harmony among local communities.

Comprising members from all sects, the committees have guaranteed the secure passage of food and supplies. The first convoy, carrying essential goods, is scheduled to depart from Thall to Parachinar on January 4 at 10:00 AM under police protection.

The peace initiative follows an agreement finalized on January 1, in which local leaders pledged to put aside personal and tribal disputes to prioritize regional safety. Additional law enforcement personnel will remain on standby to respond to any emergencies during the implementation of the agreement.

Kurram’s persistent tensions are mainly rooted in local land and tribal conflicts, often misrepresented as sectarian strife. As part of the peace agreement, participants committed to disarmament within 15 days and the removal of bunkers within a month.

The peace committees include 27 representatives from Lower Kurram, led by former MNA Pir Haider Ali Shah, and 48 members from Upper Kurram, headed by ex-Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi.

This collaborative effort is expected to pave the way for long-term stability in the region, ensuring both the safety of residents and the uninterrupted supply of essential goods. Authorities are optimistic that this framework will help reduce violence and foster a lasting peace in Kurram.
