Beijing, January 4, 2025: Chinese authorities have dismissed concerns about a potential pandemic following reports of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, attributing the surge in cases to a typical seasonal increase.

Social media videos showing overcrowded hospitals sparked public anxiety, but officials assured that the situation is under control with no imminent risk of a health crisis. In response to inquiries about the spread of respiratory diseases and influenza A, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “Respiratory infections tend to peak during winter in the northern hemisphere. This year’s outbreak appears less severe and on a smaller scale compared to last year.”

Mao added that the government prioritizes the health of both Chinese citizens and foreigners in the country, emphasizing, “It is safe to travel in China.”

Health authorities further explained that respiratory infections commonly surge during winter, and the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration has issued updated guidelines for managing such illnesses in cold weather.

The Health Ministry confirmed on Friday, January 3, that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains vigilant regarding the spread of HMPV.
