Washington D.C., September 7, 2024 – Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, honored the sacrifices of Pakistan’s Armed Forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism during a Pakistan Defense and Martyrs’ Day ceremony held in Washington. In his address, Ambassador Sheikh highlighted that over 80,000 Pakistanis, including 10,000 security personnel, have lost their lives combating terrorism. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, particularly the renewed challenges since August 2021. The ceremony was attended by diplomats, U.S. officials, and members of the Pakistani community, all paying tribute to the courage and dedication of Pakistan’s soldiers.

Ambassador Sheikh also underscored Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to international peace, noting that more than 235,000 Pakistani troops have served in 48 United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1960. He praised U.S.-Pakistan defense cooperation, focusing on counter-terrorism, security, and humanitarian efforts. In addition, he urged the international community to support the people of Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir in their fight for self-determination.

Earlier, Defence Attache Brigadier Irfan Ali lauded the professionalism and dedication of Pakistan’s Armed Forces, paying tribute to those who have laid down their lives or suffered injuries defending the nation. The event concluded with a solemn homage to the brave men and women of Pakistan’s military.
