Haris Rauf injured in tri-nation series opener as New Zealand set strong target

Lahore, February 8, 2025: Pakistan suffered a significant setback in the opening match of the Tri-Nation ODI series against New Zealand, as ace pacer Haris Rauf was forced to leave the field after bowling just 6.2 overs due to an ankle injury.

Rauf, who had been in fine form, began experiencing discomfort in his ankle while delivering the second ball of the 37th over. Visibly in pain, he briefly touched his hip before walking off the field without waiting for the physio, leaving a noticeable void in Pakistan’s bowling attack.

The severity of the injury remains unclear, but initial reports suggest Rauf may have twisted his ankle, forcing him to abandon his spell. Salman Ali Agha stepped in to complete the over, but concerns over Rauf’s fitness have overshadowed Pakistan’s tournament preparations.

With the ICC Champions Trophy set to begin on February 19, Rauf’s injury is a major concern for Pakistan. His absence would further weaken the squad, which has already lost opener Saim Ayub to injury, ruling him out of the tournament.

New Zealand posts strong total

Meanwhile, New Zealand, after winning the toss and electing to bat, posted a formidable 331/6 in 50 overs. The highlight of their innings was a scintillating century from Glenn Phillips, who smashed 106 off 74 balls, propelling the visitors to a commanding total.

With Rauf’s condition uncertain, Pakistan faces a crucial test both in the ongoing series and in the buildup to the Champions Trophy.
