IMF Chief reaffirms support for Pakistan’s reform agenda in meeting with PM Shehbaz

Dubai, February 12, 2025: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025 in Dubai. The discussion focused on Pakistan’s ongoing IMF programme and the government’s comprehensive reform agenda aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to structural reforms and fiscal discipline, which have played a pivotal role in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy. Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the progress made under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), emphasizing its role in economic recovery and sustainable growth. He reiterated the government’s dedication to maintaining reform momentum, particularly in tax reforms, energy sector efficiency, and private sector development.

IMF Chief Georgieva commended Pakistan for effectively implementing the IMF-backed programme, noting improvements in economic performance, including rising growth and declining inflation. She praised Prime Minister Shehbaz’s leadership and personal commitment to reforms, acknowledging that Pakistan is on a positive economic trajectory.

Georgieva reaffirmed the IMF’s continued support for Pakistan’s reform efforts, stressing the importance of fiscal discipline, structural adjustments, and good governance to ensure long-term economic stability and growth.
