Zelensky emphasizes importance of Trump’s support after White House confrontation

London, March 1, 2025: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stressed the crucial role of U.S. backing for Ukraine, just a day after an intense public clash with President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting, originally set to discuss a natural resources deal, devolved into a heated exchange, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance berating Zelensky in front of reporters. At one point, Trump angrily accused him of “gambling with World War III.”

Following the dispute, European leaders swiftly rallied behind Zelensky, with the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stating that “the free world needs a new leader.” Meanwhile, Russian officials, including former President Dmitry Medvedev, expressed satisfaction over the confrontation, with Medvedev remarking that Zelensky had “finally got a proper slap down in the Oval Office.”

Despite the tensions, Zelensky took a measured tone in his response after arriving in London to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. In a series of posts on social media, he reiterated his gratitude for U.S. support and emphasized that Ukraine and the U.S. “remain strategic partners.” He acknowledged Trump’s desire to end the war but stressed that “no one wants peace more than we do.”

Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to sign the minerals agreement that was the focus of his visit but underscored the need for more than just economic deals. “A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine. We’ve been fighting for three years, and the Ukrainian people need to know that America is on our side,” he stated.

His remarks come amid growing concerns that Trump’s approach to Russia could sideline Ukraine in key diplomatic decisions. Just last week, Trump falsely claimed Ukraine had started the war and labeled Zelensky a “dictator.” The week before, he suggested that Ukraine “may be Russian someday” while discussing the minerals deal.

Western leaders swiftly reaffirmed their solidarity with Kyiv. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the Oval Office dispute as “very unfortunate” and urged Zelensky to find a way to repair ties with the U.S. leadership. A joint statement from EU leaders praised Zelensky’s “dignity” and the bravery of the Ukrainian people.

Zelensky is set to meet Starmer at the British prime minister’s official residence later Saturday, followed by a broader summit on Sunday with European leaders. The gathering is expected to focus on countering Russia’s influence and reinforcing support for Ukraine amid shifting U.S. policy.
