Islamabad, May 30, 2025: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad on Friday sentenced Member of the National Assembly Abdul Latif, former MPA Wazirzada, and nine Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers to 27 years in prison each for their involvement in the May 9, 2023 attack on the Ramna Police Station during violent protests.

The verdict was announced by Judge Tahir Abbas Supra, who found the defendants guilty on multiple charges including terrorism, attempted murder of police personnel, arson, and obstruction of law enforcement duties. The court heard testimonies from 20 witnesses, including magistrates and police officials, during the trial.

Four of the convicts were taken into custody in the courtroom immediately following the judgment.

The 27-year sentence includes 5 years for attempted murder of police officers, 4 years for setting motorcycles on fire, 4 years for burning the police station, 3 months for obstructing official duties, 1 month for violating Section 144, 2 years for unlawful assembly and 10 years under anti-terrorism provisions

Each convict was also handed fines amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees.

In his remarks, Judge Supra condemned the misuse of democratic rights, stating, “Protest is a democratic right, but violence and attacks on state institutions cannot and will not be tolerated. If you start attacking your own police stations, this country will become ungovernable.”

The attack on the Ramna Police Station was part of a wave of violent unrest that erupted across the country following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9, 2023. The protests led to multiple deaths, injuries, and widespread damage to both public and private property.

The incident at Ramna was among the most serious, prompting a sweeping crackdown that resulted in the arrest of more than 1,900 individuals, including several top PTI leaders who now face ongoing legal proceedings.
