Islamabad, June 1, 2025: In a notable development for regional diplomacy, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, held a telephonic conversation with Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, during which both sides agreed to elevate diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level.
The call followed Pakistan’s official announcement to upgrade its diplomatic mission in Kabul by appointing an ambassador — a position that had remained vacant for years amid strained bilateral ties. In a swift reciprocal move, the Afghan government raised the status of its envoy in Islamabad from Chargé d’Affaires to ambassador.
A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the exchange, stating that Minister Muttaqi welcomed the decision and expressed hope that it would strengthen bilateral engagement. He described the move as a positive step toward deeper cooperation and mutual understanding.
During the conversation, the two foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the decisions made during their previous in-person meeting on April 19. Both sides stressed the need for ongoing coordination to ensure the effective implementation of those agreements, emphasizing sustained, results-oriented dialogue and mutual trust.
The ministers also discussed regional connectivity efforts, with a particular focus on the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (UAP) Railway Project. They acknowledged the strategic significance of the trilateral initiative for enhancing trade, economic integration, and regional stability. Both agreed to accelerate efforts toward finalizing a framework agreement to advance the project, which aims to open new corridors between Central and South Asia.
This diplomatic upgrade marks a significant reset in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and signals a shared commitment to building a more stable and cooperative future. Despite historical complexities, both nations appear poised to foster a relationship grounded in respect, dialogue, and shared regional goals.
