SUB NEWS exclusive- CDA’s lavish spending draws criticism amid metro fare hike and Eid bonus cuts

Islamabad, June 1, 2025: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is under fire for a series of controversial decisions that reflect a stark contrast between policies affecting the general public and those benefiting high-ranking officials.

In a move that has sparked widespread concern, the CDA has doubled fares for the Metro Bus Service — a critical mode of transportation for low-income commuters in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The fare hike is reportedly aimed at reducing the financial burden of government subsidies on the service.

A CDA spokesperson stated that despite the fare increase, the authority plans to introduce discounted monthly passes for senior citizens and students to mitigate the impact on vulnerable groups.

However, the fare hike comes at a time when CDA officers are facing disappointment over the decision to withhold their Eid bonuses — a move that contradicts recommendations from the CDA Board. The decision has led to frustration and low morale among CDA employees.

Despite citing financial constraints as the reason for cutting subsidies and bonuses, the CDA has reportedly purchased nearly half a dozen brand-new luxury vehicles for board members, costing over Rs. 80 million. This lavish expenditure has raised serious questions about financial priorities within the organization.

As of now, no official response has been issued by Interior Minister, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, or the Prime Minister’s Office regarding these controversial decisions.

Critics argue that while austerity is being enforced on public services and employees, the top leadership continues to enjoy privileges — highlighting a growing disconnect between governance and public accountability.
