Interior Minister dismisses rumours of President Zardari’s ouster as ‘malicious campaign’

Islamabad, July 10, 2025: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday strongly rejected rumours circulating on social media regarding the alleged ouster of President Asif Ali Zardari, terming them “baseless” and part of a “malicious campaign.”

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Naqvi reaffirmed the unity between Pakistan’s political leadership and military establishment, dismissing speculation about President Zardari’s resignation or any leadership transition.

“There has been no discussion, nor does any such idea exist,” Naqvi said, referring to rumours that President Zardari had been asked to step down or that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal General Asim Munir was being considered for the presidency.

The interior minister described the narrative as a coordinated attempt to malign the president, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the COAS. “This campaign has no foundation and is designed to create division where none exists,” he stated.

Naqvi further quoted President Zardari as saying, “I know who is spreading these falsehoods, why they are doing so, and who stands to benefit from this propaganda.” He emphasised that the president continues to enjoy a “strong and respectful” relationship with the military leadership.

“The sole focus of the COAS is the strength and stability of Pakistan—nothing else,” Naqvi added.

He also suggested that foreign hostile elements could be behind the disinformation effort, vowing, “The government will take whatever action is necessary to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah.”

Naqvi echoed similar sentiments during a media interaction in Sukkur last week, urging the public not to fall for social media speculation. “Some people are disturbed by our unity,” he said, noting that for the first time in years, the country’s civilian and military leadership were aligned in vision and purpose.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) also issued a statement dismissing the rumours and reaffirming President Zardari’s commitment to serving his constitutional term.
