Lahore, July 10, 2025: Pakistan men’s head coach Mike Hesson has confirmed that Babar Azam will continue to play as an opener in the national T20 side, dismissing speculation about the star batter taking on wicketkeeping responsibilities.

“There has been no conversation with Babar Azam about wicketkeeping. We see him purely as an opener,” Hesson told reporters during a media briefing. He further clarified that no batter has been instructed to maintain a strike rate of 150, noting that Pakistan’s recent struggles in T20s are rooted in broader issues within the batting unit.

Hesson also confirmed that experienced pacer Hasan Ali will be part of the squad for the upcoming West Indies tour. “Hasan Ali is playing very good cricket. In the absence of some of our regular fast bowlers, we’ve given others a chance. Players who align with our long-term international plans will continue to get opportunities,” he said.

Commenting on the current bowling setup, Hesson praised Shaheen Shah Afridi as a “world-class bowler” while acknowledging the absence of Haris Rauf due to injury. He also confirmed the inclusion of Salman Mirza as Hasan Ali’s backup.

On the subject of team selection, Hesson explained the process: “I am part of the selection committee. A pool of 20 players is chosen by the committee, from which the final 15-member squad is selected by the captain and coach, and submitted to the chairman.”
