Madrid, October 10, 2024 — Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 38-year-old will bid farewell to the sport after representing Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month.

In recent years, injuries have limited Nadal’s appearances on the court, with the tennis icon hinting in 2023 that the 2024 season might be his last. In a video message released on Thursday, Nadal confirmed his decision, stating, “I am here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis. The reality is that these past few years, especially the last two, have been difficult. I haven’t been able to play without limitations.”

Nadal leaves an indelible mark on tennis, ranking as the second-most successful men’s singles player in history, behind his long-time rival Novak Djokovic. Nicknamed the ‘King of Clay,’ Nadal claimed a record 14 French Open titles, with a remarkable 112-4 win-loss record at Roland Garros — an achievement unmatched by any player in Grand Slam history at a single tournament.

Beyond his dominance on clay, Nadal secured four US Open titles, two Australian Open championships, and two Wimbledon victories. He also claimed Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles and led Spain to four Davis Cup titles, most recently in 2019. Alongside Djokovic and 20-time major champion Roger Federer, Nadal formed part of the ‘Big Three,’ a trio that defined men’s tennis for over two decades and captivated millions of fans worldwide.

Nadal’s farewell at the Davis Cup Finals will mark the end of an era, as one of tennis’ greatest champions steps off the court for the final time.
