Bilawal urges govt to seek international aid, criticises delay in flood relief

Karachi, September 12, 2025: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has urged the federal government to immediately seek international assistance to support millions of flood-affected people across the country.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Bilawal welcomed the government’s decision to declare a climate and agricultural emergency, noting that it came following PPP’s earlier demand. However, he expressed disappointment that no relief package had yet been announced under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for the hardest-hit areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and particularly South Punjab.

“There is no excuse to cut off millions affected from this assistance. We demand the government initiate this process immediately,” he wrote.

The PPP chairman said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had personally assured him that flood victims would be provided relief through BISP, but the promise has yet to be fulfilled.

Bilawal also criticised the government’s hesitation in making an international appeal through the United Nations system, calling the delay “incomprehensible.” He reminded that such appeals are standard practice worldwide during major disasters, pointing to Pakistan’s 2022 floods when, as foreign minister, he had helped initiate a similar call for aid.

He further announced that the PPP would table resolutions in all provincial assemblies, the National Assembly, and the Senate to press the government into urgent action.
