Karachi, September 26, 2025: The University of Karachi has cancelled the LLB degree of Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court, declaring it null and void. A formal notification was issued by the university administration following the Syndicate’s approval in its meeting on August 31, 2024.
According to the notification, the decision was taken on the recommendations of the Unfair Means (UFM) Committee, which found Tariq Mahmood, son of Qazi Muhammad Akram, guilty of using unfair means during his studies. He has also been barred from admission to any university or college for three years and prohibited from appearing in any qualifying examination under Section C8 of the degree rules.
The university clarified that Jahangiri was never a student of Islamia Law College Karachi in 1989, contrary to earlier claims. His LLB enrollment number (AIIL-7124/87) and seat number (22857) have been withdrawn, and his academic record has been expunged with the Vice Chancellor’s approval.
The development comes a day after Justice Jahangiri appeared before a Sindh High Court bench hearing a case related to his academic credentials. He told the court it was unprecedented for a sitting High Court judge to stand in the dock like an accused.
Justice Jahangiri maintained that his degree was genuine and insisted he had personally appeared in the exams. He also stressed that in his 34 years of service, no corruption charges had ever been levelled against him.
