Islamabad (IPS): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with President Asif Ali Zardari at the President’s House to discuss constitutional amendments and the current political situation. During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the status of constitutional reforms, with the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) agreeing to retract their support for the establishment of constitutional courts.
A special parliamentary committee, chaired by Khursheed Shah, convened to deliberate on the draft of the 26th constitutional amendment. Sources indicate that the ruling coalition and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) have agreed to drop the proposal for the creation of a constitutional court and will instead form a constitutional bench.
The government and JUI have decided to seek input from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the joint draft. Maulana Fazlur Rehman will share the final version with PTI leadership, with the draft nearing completion.
The special parliamentary committee meeting has adjourned and will reconvene tomorrow after Friday prayers.
