Karachi, October 19, 2025: Sindh Agriculture Minister Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar has called on the federal government to immediately announce the wheat support price, warning that delays are placing farmers under severe financial strain.
In a statement on Sunday, Mahar said that under IMF-imposed restrictions, provincial governments cannot independently fix the wheat support price without the Centre’s approval.
“As a result, the delay in determining a minimum wheat support price is causing serious hardship for growers,” he noted.
The minister proposed a minimum rate of Rs4,200 per 40kg, arguing that without a fair and timely price, many farmers might abandon wheat cultivation for more profitable crops — a move he warned could endanger the country’s future food security.
The issue has also been taken up by the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Central Executive Committee, which has demanded the Centre announce the support price without further delay.
Sindh has already launched a Rs56 billion Wheat Cultivation Support Programme, providing a subsidy of Rs24,700 per acre for the purchase of urea and DAP fertilizers. The assistance targets 411,000 farmers owning between one and 25 acres of land, with 132,601 growers registered so far.
Separately, the province has allocated Rs8 billion for the Hari Card Scheme to extend additional financial relief to small farmers.
Mahar emphasised the need for a uniform wheat support price nationwide, urging the federal government to adopt a coordinated national policy to protect farmers’ livelihoods and stabilise the agricultural economy.
