Karachi, November 1, 2025: Former Sindh chief minister and senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aftab Shaban Mirani passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed.

According to the family, Mirani’s funeral prayers will be offered tonight (Saturday) at 10pm at Masjid Bait-ul-Islam in Defence Phase-IV, Karachi. He will be laid to rest at the Gizri Graveyard, they added.

Mirani, a seasoned politician and veteran PPP leader, served as chief minister of Sindh in 1990 and later as federal defence minister during Benazir Bhutto’s second tenure (1993–1996). Over his decades-long political career, he was elected multiple times to the National Assembly on the PPP ticket.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed profound grief over Mirani’s passing, calling him a close associate of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto and a devoted party stalwart.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also extended condolences, describing Mirani as “a man of integrity, humility, and dignity” who remained an “invaluable asset to the party.”

“The PPP and the province of Sindh have lost a principled leader and a sincere public servant,” Murad said, offering his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and party workers.

Speaker Sindh Assembly Syed Awais Qadir Shah, PPP MNAs Shazia Marri, Sehar Kamran, and several other leaders also expressed sorrow and prayed for the departed soul.
