Islamabad, November 6, 2025: The government has stepped up efforts to secure parliamentary approval for the 27th Constitutional Amendment, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a series of extensive meetings with delegations from key coalition partners, including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and the PML-Q.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the meetings focused on the amendment’s provisions, political implications, and strategy for ensuring smooth passage through Parliament. Officials described the discussions as comprehensive and consensus-oriented, aimed at consolidating coalition support.

PPP, MQM hold separate consultations

A high-level PPP delegation met the prime minister for detailed consultations on the proposed constitutional changes and their political and administrative impact.

The PPP team included Irfan Qadir, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, and Sherry Rehman, while the government side was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah, and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.

Following the meeting, the PPP delegation departed for Karachi via Noor Khan Airbase to attend the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, where the proposed amendment and coalition developments are expected to be discussed further.

In a separate meeting, an MQM delegation led by Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui met the prime minister. The delegation included Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, Dr Farooq Sattar, Javed Hanif Khan, Syed Aminul Haq, and Khawaja Izharul Hassan.

The MQM leadership exchanged views on the amendment and reiterated their commitment to coalition unity and political stability.

Core leadership reviews strategy

The government’s core leadership — including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Adviser to the PM Rana Sanaullah — also participated in broader discussions outlining the legal and political roadmap for the amendment’s passage.

IPP, PML-Q leaders meet PM

Separately, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) President Abdul Aleem Khan called on the prime minister to discuss legislative priorities and coalition coordination. Minister of State for Overseas Pakistanis Aun Chaudhry was also present.

A PML-Q delegation, led by Chaudhry Saalik Hussain, also met the prime minister to review the amendment proposal and share input on its key provisions.

PTI vows to oppose amendment

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced that his party would “strongly oppose” the proposed amendment. Speaking to reporters outside the Lahore High Court, he claimed that the opposition had not yet been provided with the draft text of the bill.

He cautioned that provincial autonomy must not be compromised, stressing that parliamentary discussions should serve the national interest.

Commenting on ongoing political interactions, Barrister Gohar remarked there was “no harm if anyone meets Shah Mehmood Qureshi,” saying political dialogue should not be viewed negatively.
