Islamabad, December 26, 2025: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday paid rich tribute to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto Shaheed on her 18th death anniversary, describing her as one of the great leaders of the modern world for her historic contributions to democracy, rule of law, and women’s empowerment.

In a special message, Gilani said Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto took landmark steps to ensure the continuity of democracy, independence of the judiciary, electoral reforms, and the political, social and economic empowerment of women in Pakistan. Owing to these achievements, he said, she is remembered among the most influential global leaders of her time.

He said Benazir Bhutto set a shining example of democracy, equality and human rights not only for Pakistan but for the world at large. Her principled leadership and unwavering political struggle, he added, would forever remain a guiding light for the nation.

The chairman senate said Shaheed Bibi courageously confronted oppression throughout her life and devoted herself to the welfare of the people. A strong advocate of women’s rights, education, health and economic development, she inspired the younger generation with the belief that national unity, democratic values and patriotism could overcome every challenge. Her vision, courage and political wisdom, he said, continue to serve as a message of unity and stability for the country.

Gilani said it was due to these qualities that Benazir Bhutto earned nationwide representation and played a pivotal role in strengthening Pakistan as a cohesive federation. Paying homage to her sacrifices, he said the nation would never forget her services and prayed that Allah Almighty grant her the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous.

He also lauded President Asif Ali Zardari for carrying forward Shaheed Bibi’s mission with wisdom and foresight. Through historic measures such as the 18th Constitutional Amendment, Gilani said, provinces were empowered and authority was devolved to the grassroots level in line with the Constitution, thereby strengthening democracy and opening new avenues for national progress.

The chairman senate further remarked that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, like his mother and grandfather, possesses strong political acumen and a clear democratic vision. He said Bilawal’s effective diplomatic role as foreign minister was widely acknowledged and appreciated across the country. He added that Aseefa Bhutto Zardari was also prepared to play an active role in national politics by following in her mother’s footsteps.

Concluding his message, Gilani said the nation must reaffirm its resolve to turn the dream of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto into reality by fully utilising its capabilities and resources, and to continue her mission of building Pakistan into a developed, prosperous and strong democratic state.
