Imagine standing atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle: Puget Sound stretches before you, Mount Rainier’s majestic glacier-clad summit looms in the distance, and the city’s gleaming skyline sparkles below. Olympic National Park’s mist-shrouded ancient forests, Mount Rainier National Park’s alpine meadows and turquoise lakes, the San Juan Islands’ abundant wildlife, scenic ferry rides across Puget Sound, and the Bavarian-style charm of Leavenworth offer glimpses of Washington’s unparalleled natural splendor. The windswept Columbia River Gorge, the expansive dry landscapes near Spokane, and Seattle’s rain-kissed yet luminous streets captivate the soul.
Washington’s cultural and innovative landscape commands global attention. Seattle hosts headquarters of tech giants Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks, alongside aerospace leader Boeing. The University of Washington stands as a premier research institution. The Puget Sound region’s music and arts scene thrives, Fremont’s bohemian vibe endures, and Chinatown-International District’s Asian heritage adds rich layers. Landmarks like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market (famous for its flying fish tradition), and the state capitol in Olympia blend history with modernity.
The state’s geography is remarkably diverse. Western Washington features mild, rainy temperate rainforests, the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges, and over 3,000 miles of Puget Sound shoreline. Eastern Washington contrasts with semi-arid plateaus, fertile Columbia Plateau farmlands, and cities like Vancouver and Spokane. Mount Rainier, at 14,410 feet, is the state’s highest peak, while Olympic, Mount Rainier, and North Cascades National Parks are natural treasures.

Bordered by Canada (British Columbia) to the north, Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Washington embodies the essence of the Pacific Northwest.
The economy thrives across multiple sectors:

- Aerospace: Boeing’s primary operations anchor this vital industry.

Diversity defines the state’s spirit. Alongside a white majority, significant Asian (Chinese, Filipino, Indian), Hispanic, and Black communities thrive, particularly in Seattle. The Muslim community is active, with institutions like the Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) serving thousands. The Pakistani community flourishes in Seattle, Kirkland, Bothell, and Redmond, with halal restaurants offering favorites like Peshawari kebabs, biryani, and nihari, alongside vibrant community events.
In 2025, my family visited Washington, where Pakistani and Muslim friends—Sajid Ali, Zahid Jan , and others—guided us through Seattle, a Puget Sound ferry ride, a Mount Rainier drive, and a heartfelt home-cooked Pakistani feast. Their hospitality and warmth etched this verdant state indelibly in our hearts.
Sports and outdoor pursuits abound: Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Mariners (MLB), Sounders (MLS), along with kayaking, hiking, skiing, sailing, and fishing.
In contrast to Rhode Island’s maritime soul explored in a previous column, Washington embodies an evergreen essence—lush greenery, technological brilliance, natural majesty, innovation, diversity, and the American dream in full bloom.
