Kandy, February 22, 2026: England produced a dominant all-round performance to outclass Sri Lanka by 51 runs in a low-scoring Super Eights match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing a modest target of 147, Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 95 in 16.4 overs, as England’s bowling attack delivered a ruthless display led by Jofra Archer and Will Jacks.
Sri Lanka’s innings got off to a disastrous start when Archer struck early, dismissing Pathum Nissanka for nine. The pressure intensified in the fourth over as Jacks removed Kusal Mendis and debutant Pavan Rathnayake, leaving the hosts reeling at 20-3.
Archer returned to dismiss Kamil Mishara, while Jacks continued his impressive spell by removing Dunith Wellalage, reducing Sri Lanka to 34-5 inside six overs.
A brief resistance from Kamindu Mendis and skipper Dasun Shanaka helped Sri Lanka cross 50, but the partnership was broken by Liam Dawson. England maintained the stranglehold as Jamie Overton removed Dushan Hemantha.
Shanaka top-scored with a fighting 30 before falling to Adil Rashid, who later wrapped up the innings, completing a comprehensive bowling effort.
Earlier, England also struggled with the bat after choosing to bat first. Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler fell early, followed by Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton, leaving England under pressure at 32-2.
A steady partnership between Phil Salt and skipper Harry Brook stabilized the innings before Brook’s dismissal. Salt anchored the innings superbly, registering his eighth T20I half-century with a well-compiled 62 off 40 balls.
Despite late wickets, England managed to post 146, with valuable contributions from Sam Curran, Will Jacks, and Jamie Overton. For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage stood out with figures of 3 for 26, while Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka picked up two wickets each.
The emphatic victory strengthened England’s position in the Super Eights stage, while Sri Lanka were left to reflect on a disappointing batting collapse at home.
