Rome, February 26, 2026: Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi held key meetings in Rome with the interior ministers of Italy and Spain, as well as the migration minister of Greece, during a four-nation conference focused on curbing illegal migration.

The high-level meeting brought together Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and Greece’s Migration Minister Athanasios Plevris.

The European ministers commended Pakistan’s efforts to combat illegal migration, highlighting a reported 47 percent reduction in such cases. They endorsed Minister Naqvi’s proposal to address irregular migration through the promotion of legal pathways and agreed to extend full support to Pakistan for capacity building through the European Union framework.

The four countries agreed to adopt a coordinated, multi-level strategy to tackle illegal migration, human smuggling and narcotics trafficking. A joint policy framework was finalized, and it was decided that individuals involved in serious criminal offenses would be repatriated from Europe to Pakistan to face legal proceedings under Pakistani law.

The ministers emphasized the importance of enhanced coordination and the establishment of a joint and rapid response mechanism to effectively counter transnational crime. They also agreed to hold the next round of talks in Pakistan later this year.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohsin Naqvi said that mafias involved in illegal migration had been brought to justice and stressed that Europe remains among the regions most affected by irregular migration flows. He underscored that only a coordinated international mechanism can effectively address the challenge.

The European ministers praised Pakistan’s measures, with Italy’s Matteo Piantedosi noting that Pakistani institutions had taken commendable steps, while Spain’s Fernando Grande-Marlaska described the actions under Naqvi’s leadership as exemplary. The ministers expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s cooperation and commitment.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy Ali Javed, Director General FIA Dr. Usman Anwar, and other senior officials were also present at the meeting.
