Islamabad, April 2, 2026: Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that anti-corruption efforts are closely aligned with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He made these remarks during a meeting with Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmed, at Parliament House in Islamabad, according to a press release issued by the Senate Secretariat on Thursday.
Chairman Gilani highlighted the importance of strong institutions and reduced corruption for sustainable development, emphasizing that transparency and accountability remain the cornerstone of good governance. Reflecting on his political career, he noted that he has consistently advocated these principles while serving in key roles, including Prime Minister and Speaker of the National Assembly.
Commending NAB’s role, Gilani appreciated the Bureau’s contributions toward promoting good governance and safeguarding national resources. He particularly lauded the findings of NAB’s Annual Report 2025, describing it as a significant document offering insights into the institution’s performance and strategic direction.
The Senate chairman expressed special appreciation for NAB’s reported recovery of over Rs6 trillion during the year—the highest since the bureau’s establishment in 1999—terming it a landmark achievement in protecting public funds.
He also welcomed the Bureau’s focus on combining financial recoveries with institutional reforms, digital innovation, and citizen-centric approaches, calling it a forward-looking strategy aimed at building a corruption-free Pakistan and strengthening public trust.
Reiterating the Senate’s support, Gilani assured that the upper house stands firmly with NAB in its mission to eliminate corruption. He stressed the need for sustained collaboration among state institutions to enhance governance, ensure justice, and maintain accountability across all sectors.
The meeting was also attended by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Finance, and Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Chairperson Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights.
