Islamabad, April 3, 2026: In a significant move to support the government’s cost-saving campaign, the National Assembly Secretariat has surrendered Rs472.1 million to the national exchequer, following directives issued by Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

The decision comes after a comprehensive review of the Secretariat’s budget and expenditures for the fiscal year, aimed at ensuring financial discipline and efficient utilization of public funds.

As part of the austerity measures, the Secretariat has also implemented a Rs21 million reduction in salaries of Members of the National Assembly, which has been deposited into the Prime Minister’s Austerity Fund 2026 to further strengthen national financial resources.

Officials said the Secretariat is working on a broader plan to achieve up to Rs2 billion in savings by the end of the fiscal year through rationalized spending and improved resource management.

Key measures include:

  • Withdrawal of a significant number of official vehicles to cut fuel and maintenance costs
  • Increased reliance on the Green Parliament Solar System to reduce electricity expenses
  • Implementation of a rotational duty system, with only around 200 staffers working on-site at a time
  • Strict curbs on non-essential expenditures, including purchases and services

Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has directed the Secretariat to accelerate efforts aimed at reducing non-essential spending and ensuring strict compliance with austerity policies across parliamentary operations.

“These steps reflect Parliament’s commitment to prudent financial management, transparency, and responsible use of public funds,” officials said.

The Secretariat indicated that further contributions to the national treasury are expected as austerity measures continue to be implemented and expanded.

The initiative is being viewed as a strong example of institutional responsibility, aligning parliamentary operations with the government’s broader economic stabilization and cost-efficiency agenda.
