Peshawar, April 23, 2026: Pakistan’s national hockey team has initiated a renewed effort to rebuild its squad through modern training techniques, setting its sights firmly on the upcoming Asia Cup as a key milestone.

Chief Selector Samiullah Khan outlined the strategy while speaking to reporters during his visit to China Window in Peshawar. He revealed that open trials for the senior team have commenced in the city, aimed at identifying fresh talent from across the country and building a competitive, well-balanced squad.

Members of the Pakistan Hockey Federation selection committee, including former Olympians, were also present, signalling collective backing for the revival initiative.

Samiullah emphasised that success in a major international tournament could play a crucial role in reviving international hockey activities in Pakistan. He acknowledged that the sport is currently grappling with significant challenges, particularly financial constraints and a lack of sponsorship, which continue to affect players’ livelihoods.

He stressed the need to provide stronger institutional support and employment opportunities for athletes, adding that efforts are underway to modernise training systems and reassess club-level structures.

“The immediate objective is to reach the Asia Cup final and deliver improved performances at the Hockey World Cup,” he said.

Expressing optimism, Samiullah added that with consistent planning, investment, and commitment, Pakistan hockey has the potential to regain its lost prominence on the global stage.
