New York, May 29, 2026: A delegation of Turkmenistan, headed by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance held in New York under the theme, “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges.”
During the meeting, the head of Turkmenistan’s foreign ministry thanked Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for inviting Turkmenistan to participate in the gathering. He reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s support for the Global Governance Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 1, 2025, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
The minister said Turkmenistan considers its accession to the Group of Friends an important platform for advancing the initiative within the framework of the United Nations.
As part of efforts to implement the Global Governance Initiative, the Turkmen delegation presented four practical proposals aimed at strengthening international cooperation and improving global governance mechanisms.
The first proposal focused on the transition toward preventive governance. Turkmenistan proposed the establishment of a Multilateral Platform for Preventive Governance to support the early prevention of conflicts and crises.
The second proposal emphasized strengthening the international legal framework. In this regard, Turkmenistan is actively promoting an initiative at the United Nations to declare 2028 as the International Year of Law, with the aim of creating a broad platform for dialogue on the role of law amid ongoing global transformations.
The third proposal addressed the importance of data reliability and digitalization. Turkmenistan highlighted the need for verified and trustworthy data in managerial and policy decision-making processes and called for the development of universal principles of data reliability along with joint verification mechanisms.
The meeting brought together representatives from various countries to discuss collective approaches to addressing global challenges and enhancing the effectiveness of international governance systems.
