Islamabad, June 18, 2026: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Thursday welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (IMoU) between the United States and Iran, describing it as a landmark diplomatic breakthrough that has contributed to extending the ceasefire agreement between the two countries and advancing prospects for lasting regional peace.
In a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker extended heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Interior Minister Senator Mohsin Raza Naqvi, and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their role in facilitating the agreement.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq particularly praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for successfully mediating the understanding between Washington and Tehran, stating that the premier’s statesmanship, diplomatic vision and commitment to regional and international peace had earned Pakistan global recognition as a credible and trusted partner in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
He also commended Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his strategic foresight, steadfast support and contributions towards fostering dialogue and consensus among the parties involved.
The Speaker lauded the leadership of US President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance for their commitment to constructive engagement. He also appreciated the role of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf for pursuing dialogue in the interest of regional and international peace.
According to the Speaker, the Islamabad MoU has helped bring an end to hostilities and facilitated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns over international trade and economic activity. He noted that the conflict had posed serious socio-economic challenges, disrupted global trade routes, increased volatility in energy markets and threatened wider international stability.
Describing the agreement as a historic achievement of Pakistan’s political and military leadership, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq expressed confidence that the understanding would lay the groundwork for durable peace, regional stability, economic recovery and stronger international cooperation.
He emphasized that the success of the Islamabad MoU demonstrated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, mutual respect among nations and the promotion of regional and global harmony. The achievement, he added, has further enhanced Pakistan’s stature and credibility within the international community.
The Speaker also congratulated the people of Pakistan on what he termed a remarkable diplomatic accomplishment, saying the agreement reflects the country’s growing influence as a responsible advocate for peace, dialogue and international cooperation.
He further acknowledged the supportive roles played by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar and Egypt in encouraging diplomatic engagement and creating conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations between the parties.
“The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding stands as a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to peace and its increasing role as a bridge-builder in international diplomacy,” the Speaker remarked
