Lahore, November 15, 2024- Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced a health emergency in Lahore and Multan on Friday in response to the worsening smog situation. Addressing a press conference in Lahore, she revealed that the government is considering a three-day lockdown on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in both cities to curb the crisis.

“The chief minister had already introduced a 10-year plan in March to combat smog,” said Aurangzeb, who also holds the environment portfolio. She emphasized that smog has escalated into a national disaster, necessitating immediate and long-term measures.

Aurangzeb stated that all relevant departments were consulted in formulating the comprehensive 10-year plan. She expressed her willingness to brief the Lahore High Court on the matter, as the court recently directed the Punjab government to establish a long-term policy to address the smog issue.

As part of immediate actions, a ban has been imposed on construction activities in Lahore and Multan. The government is also considering extending school closures for another week due to the deteriorating air quality.

The minister urged citizens to minimize outdoor activities to protect themselves from the health risks associated with the smog.
