Pakistan, Russia discuss regional security and counterterrorism cooperation at 12th Joint Working Group meeting

Islamabad, June 23, 2026: Pakistan and Russia held the 12th meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group (JWG) to Counter International Terrorism in Islamabad on Tuesday, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation against terrorism and addressing emerging regional security challenges.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Muhammad Khalid Khan Jamali, while the Russian side was headed by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Dmitry Lyubinsky.

During the meeting, both sides held detailed discussions on the evolving regional terrorist threat, with particular emphasis on terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and its potential implications for neighboring countries and wider regional stability.

The two delegations exchanged views on the prevailing security environment and underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Participants also reviewed the current state of bilateral cooperation in the field of counterterrorism and explored opportunities for further strengthening collaboration through regional and international platforms, particularly the United Nations (UN) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The meeting reflected the shared commitment of Pakistan and Russia to promoting regional peace, stability, and security through sustained dialogue and enhanced cooperation on counterterrorism-related issues.

Both sides agreed to continue close coordination and engagement to effectively address common security challenges and contribute to regional and international efforts aimed at combating terrorism.
