Islamabad, June 26, 2026: Pakistan on Friday observed the 9th of Muharram with deep religious reverence and elaborate security arrangements as thousands of mourners participated in processions and majalis across the country to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members and companions in the Battle of Karbala.
Authorities deployed tens of thousands of security personnel nationwide, enforced strict traffic management plans and established monitoring and surveillance mechanisms to ensure the peaceful conduct of religious gatherings.
In Islamabad, the central Muharram procession was taken out after Zuhr prayers from the Markazi Imambargah Asna Ashari in G-6/2. The procession proceeded along its traditional route and was scheduled to culminate at the same venue late at night.
Karachi’s main procession departed from Nishtar Park at around 1:30pm and headed towards Imambargah Hussainia Iranian. After offering Namaz-i-Zohrain at Imambargah Ali Raza, mourners continued through Saddar Dawakhana and Empress Market before proceeding towards the final destination.
In Hyderabad, the central procession organized by Anjuman Guldasta-i-Akbar began from Imambargah Chahardah Masoomeen in Latifabad and concluded at the same venue later in the evening.
Lahore’s central procession commenced from Islampura, while authorities reported that 81 processions and 386 religious gatherings were being held across the provincial capital.
In Peshawar, the main mourning procession started from Imambargah Hussainia Hall at around 10am and concluded peacefully in the evening.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry chaired a high-level meeting to review Muharram security arrangements across the country.
The meeting was attended by home secretaries, senior police officials and representatives from all provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Participants reviewed security measures for processions and majalis and assessed preparedness to respond to any emergency situation.
Chaudhry emphasized that safeguarding the lives and property of citizens remained the government’s foremost priority and directed law enforcement agencies to further strengthen security arrangements.
In a tragic incident in Rohri, Sukkur district, four people lost their lives due to suffocation while 14 others sustained minor injuries during a Muharram procession.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar confirmed the casualties while visiting the historic Nau Dhala procession. He directed police, rescue services, medical teams and district authorities to maintain complete coordination to effectively handle any emergency.
Lanjar also conducted an aerial review of Muharram security arrangements and reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the province.
Karachi police deployed 20,181 personnel, including 1,329 traffic police officials, for Muharram 9 security duties. More than 6,800 officers were specifically assigned to the central procession, while reserve forces and snipers were stationed along sensitive routes.
Traffic police implemented extensive diversions as major roads, including M.A. Jinnah Road from Gurumandir to Tower, remained closed during procession timings. Commuters were advised to use alternate routes.
Federal authorities established a comprehensive multi-layer security plan in Islamabad involving police, Rangers and army personnel.
Around 16,000 security personnel were deployed, supported by bomb disposal units, armoured personnel carriers, scanners and surveillance systems. Drones were used for digital monitoring, while geo-tagging of all imambargahs, majalis venues and procession routes was completed.
Authorities also launched the “Mehfooz Muharram” mobile application, enabling citizens to report suspicious activities, security concerns and emergencies through live location and image-sharing features.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, accompanied by Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Nasir Rizvi, visited the central procession to review arrangements. He stated that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was personally monitoring security measures nationwide through the central control room.
Punjab authorities deployed more than 70,000 personnel for Muharram 9 security duties, while over 152,000 police officers have been assigned throughout the Muharram period.
Punjab Inspector General of Police Rao Abdul Kareem directed strict implementation of Section 144. Snipers were deployed on rooftops overlooking procession routes, while plainclothes personnel were assigned to sensitive areas.
The Punjab Safe Cities Authority continued live monitoring of processions through thousands of CCTV cameras, drones, body-worn cameras and advanced surveillance systems.
Earlier, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had ordered implementation of a three-tier security plan and activation of QR-coded panic buttons installed at thousands of imambargahs across the province.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police deployed approximately 43,317 personnel across the province, including 12,000 officers in Peshawar alone.
A three-layer security system was implemented for all processions, supported by bomb disposal units, sniffer dogs, plainclothes officers and surveillance teams. Additional traffic personnel were deployed to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi reviewed arrangements in Peshawar and praised the efforts of security agencies. He urged citizens to rise above political differences and work collectively for peace and harmony.
Police officials reported that 907 Muharram processions were expected across the province, with 286 categorized as highly sensitive. Section 144 remained in force in several districts, while Muharram activities were monitored through the Safe City camera network.
Muharram processions and majalis across Pakistan continued peacefully under heightened security, with religious scholars highlighting the timeless message of sacrifice, justice, patience and steadfastness demonstrated by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
Authorities remain on high alert ahead of Ashura processions on the 10th of Muharram, with security agencies continuing coordinated efforts to ensure peace and public safety throughout the country.
